Mattie Ross (Kim Darby) doggedly pursues her father's killer and thoroughly gets under the skin of everyone in her path, especially crusty old Rooster Cogburn. A good role for the Duke and Glen Campbell is on board as the third wheel, a Texas Ranger after the same scoundrel. But it's Darby who steals the show here as a pesky, thoroughly driven teen girl, seemingly heedless of the fact that she inhabits a male-dominated world. Bonus points for Robert Duvall, who appears as one of the bad guys.
